Pools on the edge of the Hill Country
San Marcos sits on the Balcones fault line. The San Marcos Springs rise from the Edwards Aquifer along that line, in the middle of town.
West of town the land climbs into limestone hills, where there is little soil and a pool is cut into rock. East of town it opens into Blackland Prairie clay, which is softer to dig but moves as it gets wet and dries out. The pool, the drainage and the deck are planned for whichever one your lot has.
